Taxonomy

There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling
on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

Taxonomy is a front-end to the largest taxonomy databases including the Gbif Backbone, Catalogue of Life, Encyclopedia of Life and World Flora Online.

It has a search facility for all taxonomic ranks and vernacular name (common name) where available.

This is version 1 so it may be rough around the edges in places.

You will need to download the program, and at least one of the main databases.

Taxonomy Program v1.0  [3.5MB] (64 bit only, it will not work on old 32 bit versions of windows)

Databases Version Dec 2022.

Gbif Backbone Database [1GB] linnaean hierarchy (~ 6.1 M Records)

Encyclopedia of Life Database [470MB] Cavalier-Smith phylogeny (~4 M records)

Catalogue of Life [700MB] Mixed cladistic / linnaean hierarchy (~4.7 M records)

World Flora Online [300MB] AGP IV linnaean hierarchy  (~1.4 M Records)

Wikipedia Taxonomy Supplemental Data [200MB] this needs one of the datasets above.

The datasets have had minimal data management, and all have numerous errors and issues. I have not attempted to correct these problems, instead made it easy to install new datasets as they become available. The most complete is the Gbif dataset.
Usage: Download and unzip one or more databases  and place in the same folder as the program. The program is portable and is not installed, to remove just delete the program and the database.

The database tab is a set of tools to install new DWCA format TSV/CSV files, its not particularly meant to be used by end users, the datasets all need some data management and alterations to fit into the program. You can use this tab to look at the raw data tables if you wish.
